I’ve talked with a lot of homeschool moms over the years and although we all do school differently, we all have something in common. At one time or another, we’ve hit a crisis. Sometimes it is due to a family emergency. Other times it is due to a learning difficulty with one of the kids. Other problems have to do with our health. Or with attitudes (our kids’ and ours). No matter what the problem is that triggers it, we’ve all struggled with overcoming it and forging ahead. But now we don’t have to face this crisis alone. Heather from Only Passionate Curiosity has created an online course called Homeschool Rescue and it is AMAZING! I wish I had been able to go through this course a few years ago when I was struggling. I eventually got through it, but this course would have saved me so much time and stress. So if you’re struggling, or even if you’re not and just want some encouragement to continue your homeschooling journey, read on!
My first piece of advice to anyone who is struggling is to take a break from teaching for a while and go through this course. Don’t feel guilty about it either! Focusing on just this one thing will immediately take a load of stress off. If you aren’t able to do that, though, Heather has organized the course and accompanying activities into a two-month plan that goes step-by-step through the whole process.
Here are some of the things you will find in this course:
It consists of 5 modules. Each module has 3-5 lessons and includes “Homework” (worksheets to fill out), resources, and helpful links. The first module, Triage Your Homeschool, starts out with you – What is it that you’re struggling with? It moves on with focusing on your kids – What do you see in their future? What is the end result you want to have at the end of their time with you? Then the course assesses your homeschool and any special needs that need to be addressed.
Module 2, Time Management Systems & Organization, helps you work through your schedule and get a solid plan in place to make your days run more smoothly. The exercises here may be eye-opening. We tend to find creative ways to waste time (at least I do!) and this will help you identify them.
Module 3 is Curriculum Planning & Organization. Here, you evaluate what you’re using, what is working, what isn’t and what to do about it. Heather also works with you on gathering supplies and setting up a space to learn in.
Module 4 walks you through Setting Students Up for Success by implementing a chore system, training them to do their chores, and the importance of follow-through. All kids need to learn these skills to be successful throughout their life.
The last one, Module 5, Teaching Older Students, focuses on helping teens learn good study habits and time management skills. This is where I’m at in my homeschooling journey and I’m most excited about this module.
But wait, there’s more! Heather has created an accountability pack of forms for kids to track their chores and assignments as well as a planner for moms with lots of options to keep you organized and on schedule. Also included is access to a private Facebook group where you will find tons of support from other homeschool moms as well as Heather. It’s been a great encouragement to me to be in this group.
